The top half of the board is the "bottom" so once you can open the board up working in the top will bring candies down and create cascades. The important thing to remember is to check the bottom half of the board as it's easy to be clearing the top and forget about checking for combos in the bottom. The frog may be useful to clear any tricky jellies or get rid of chocolate, but it isn't as important as making combos and keeping the chocolate under control.
